What is quality improvement?

The aim of any healthcare system must be to continually improve quality of patient care and reduce harm, waste and variation in the system. Quality Improvement (QI) techniques provide us with a methodology to ensure that we are able to provide these constant improvements.

An effective QI project will

  • Identify and define a problem
  • Measure the problem
  • Suggest a solution to the problem and then carry this out
  • Measure if this has produced any improvement

Further cycles then may be undertaken to produce further improvements.

The Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) suggest the "Model for Improvement" as a suitable framework to structure QI projects.
